Safari Cost

One of the most asked questions is logically how much does it cost to go on a safari in Southern Africa. As you probably presume there is no straight answer to that question since many factors will impact your final price.

Destination

Botswana’s most famous wildlife areas are the Okavango Delta, Makgadikgadi Saltpans and Chobe National Park. South Africa is home to the Kruger National Park, Cape Town, the Garden Route or the stunning coastline North of Durban. Namibia’s big hitters are the astonishing Etosha National Park, Fish River Canyon, and the dunes of Sossusvlei while Zimbabwe and Zambia share the Victoria Falls and stunning national parks.

Namibia and South Africa are the most affordable of all the safari destinations because you can rent a vehicle and self-drive around, as well as stay in self-catering accommodation. Driving and cooking yourself will bring costs down but will add to the ‘work’ you do on vacation.

For the destinations that need a guide you will have to bear in mind that he will be with you 24/7 for as long as your itinerary lasts and that will make the journey much more expensive.

Season

Peak season falls between July and August, thanks to a dry winter and huge demand from international visitors. The times between high and low season are known as ‘shoulder season’: the rains are starting or ending, the weather is heating up or cooling down and, generally, both availability and rates are good.

Christmas time is very busy in South Africa and the high season which means prices are the highest. Oftentimes a booking over a year in advance will be required. All activities and sites will also need to be pre-booked and hugely busy so if you like to stay spontaneous please avoid this time.

Comfort

Logically the star rating and comfort of the lodge or guesthouse you are staying in also has a big impact on your overall traveling costs. Most game lodges include 2 guided game drives per day and all meals included which brings the prices up but reduces daily "pocket money" since all you need to pay is for your drinks.

Most Guesthouses in South Africa have quite a high standard and are rather affordable which make them ideal for overnight stops in case the drives are too long. Breakfast is mostly included.

Generally we try to mix Guesthouses with Game Lodges depending on your itinerary in order to manage the costs and stay affrodable.

Tour Type

If you want to keep the costs low you should opt for a self-drive itinerary. That does not mean we will send you into the national parks by yourself but rather that you will do the drives between the destinations of your itinerary.

Once arrived in the game reserves you will have guided walks and/or drives performed by professionals to ensure your safety.

Guided tours are available as well but will be considerably more expensive because your guide does all the drives and will be with you 24/7. In Botswana for example he will also make sure he cooks for you and assists you in pitching up your tent.

Activities & Food

Most itineraries we do will include the guided safaris in the game reserves so you will not have extra costs for all game viewing activities. However in other destinations we can not include the entrance fees for activities because it will be entirely up to you what you want to do.

Generally entrance fees and activity fees will be quite low compared internationally and will surely not blow your budget. We will also be happy to assist in finding the right activity for you.

Meals in most game lodges will also be included, in some even the local brand alcoholic drinks. In the Guesthouses mostly breakfast in included and restaurants and pubs will be easily accessible from your lodging. Meal prices are also considerably lower than in Europe or the US.

To sum it up

As you can see there is not THE answer to the question of how much a holiday in Africa will cost you.

We best work if you give us a budget excluding the flight(s) and we will do our very best to get you the best value for money while staying withing the budget. Usually we try to balance self-catering, guesthouses and game lodges that include activities and meals which allows us to manage the budgets best.

Southern Africa really offers a fantastic variety of accommodation options for (almost) all budgets so don't hesitate to get in touch and realize a stunning itinerary together.
