ZA-UMK

UMKHOMO TOUR

This self-drive tour starts in Cape Town and ends in Port Elizabeth. It will stay in the South of the country and on your way you will be travelling along the famous "Garden Route" as well as some lesser known but certainly not less attractive places.

The distances are rather short (for South Africa) which makes it suitable for families and older travelers. Depending on the period of the year you will also have the chance to see some whales on the way which has given the tour its name, Ukhomo meaning whale in Zulu.

Days 1 to 4 - Cape Town

On arrival at the airport you make your way to the car rental terminal to collect your car for the next 2 weeks.

From the airport it is only about a 30 min drive to your accommodation which is located in Camps Bay and ideally situated to experience and explore Cape Town and its penisula.

There is lots to see and do, from Table Mountain to the V&A Waterfront, Long and Kloof Streets with their numerous cafes and restaurants, Constantia and Hout Bay, the penguins in Simon's Town, you are close to everything!

Days 5 & 6 - Franschhoek

From the Cape Peninsula it is only about an hour's drive into the Winelands, and your accommodation in Franschoek is renowned for their wines and incredible kitchen.

If you book early enough you can also overnight here in one of their suites or in their 5 star Manor House. A few short drives can take you to neighbouring wine farms for more wine tasting! Or enjoy a guided wine maker tour or the legendary wine tram, it is all up to you.

Day 7 - Gansbaai

The drive from the Winelands along the coast to Gansbaai is spectacular, and if you are keen on doing a Great White Shark Diving experience, this is the place to do it (you would need to pre-book this and leave very early to get there in time). At your guesthouse you can oversee the Ocean, so if you are there at the right time of year, you may be able to spot the whales.

Days 8 & 9 - Gondwana

After a few days on the coast it is time to do some game viewing. Even thought the cape is not most famous for its game viewing you nonetheless have Big 5 game reserves.

You will be in the Gondwana Game Reserve for the next 2 nights with all meals and 2 guided safaris a day included. Make sure you have your camera ready!

Days 10 & 11 - Knysna

It is only a short drive to Knysna with its stunning blue lagoon also known as the jewel of the garden route and you can enjoy your morning safari and breakfast before you set off.

In Knysna you will spend 2 days to take some of the stunning walks, a beautiful boat ride, eat out in the numerous restaurants, you name it!

Days 12 & 13 - Tsitsikamma

A short 1,5 hours will take you to one of South Africa's most beautiful national parks. This Park stretches for 80 km along the Indian Ocean and here you can do some of the country's most beautiful and scenic hikes, including the first section of the world-famous Otter Trail!

If you're lucky you will be able to see whales and dolphins, but if not you will also truly enjoy the massive waves breaking on the rocky coast, the many Rock Dassies dozing on the grassy lawns, or perhaps you will spot a Knysna Lourie or a Cape Clawless Otter!

Days 14 & 15 - Jeffreys Bay

Today is another short drive to your next and unfortunately last destination of your trip. Since it has been some quite exhausting days you will have the last day to enjoy with a stunning ocean view.

You will stay one last night at Moya Manzi and you can opt to just relax, surf or do any of the many other activities Jeffreys Bay has to offer.

On day 15 you will surely have the morning to enjoy a little more sun and beach before you make the short drive to Port Elizabeth Airport and fly back to Cape Town or Johannesburg and home.
