About tour
The Southwest of Uganda is blessed with towering volcanoes, picture-perfect lakes and evergreen jungles teeming with elusive wildlife. This 12day join-in group tour is a human-powered adventure, slicing through the heart of this wild, untamed land. On 9 out of 12 days, you hike, cycle and paddle this incredibly diverse part of Uganda.
The trip starts with a bang by ascending the spectacular Mount Sabinyo, easily the best day hike in Uganda. You bike to one of the most beautiful lakes in the whole of East Africa, Lake Mutanda, and hop in our pack raft to paddle on Lake Mutanda with killer views of the Virunga Volcanoes. The journey continues across the lake and onwards with a bike ride to the edge of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, home of the mountain gorilla. You traverse the national park on foot with a chance to spot this magnificent animal. A punchy bike ride takes you further north and you descend the unknown Birira River by big raft and packraft
Scheduled date: 10/04/2027-21/04/2027
Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali
Welcome to Rwanda! Your skilled driver will meet you at the airport and safely take you, your bike (rental can be arranged) and luggage to your accommodation for the first night. If you arrive early you can take a chance to discover Rwanda's capital city. Visit local markets, art galleries or taste the local cuisine in one of the many restaurants.
Day 2: Kigali and off to Uganda
Today begins with a meaningful visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, where we take time to reflect and learn abour Rwanda's dark history and the country's journey of resilience and recovery. Afterwards, you will leave the city behind and begin your journey onwards to Kisoro in Southwestern Uganda.
Along the way, you will cross the border and after a total time of 3 to 4 hours arrive at your next overnight accommodation. Then you will have time to relax and get ready for the real adventure that is waiting for you!
Day 3: Mount Sabinyo
Mount Sabinyo is located in Mgahinga National Park. You will be briefed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority and during the hike you will be accompanied by armed rangers. This is a precaution as buffalo, forest elephants and mountain gorillas live on the forested slopes of Sabinyo. It is a tough climb with steep sections sometimes supported with ladders.
In the forst you can spot a variety of beautiful birds, possibly golden monkeys and if you are really really lucky there may be an encounter with the endangered mountain gorilla. The higher you get the better the views get. The summit is 3669 m high and it is the exact point where the three countries Rwanda, Uganda and DRC come together. The descent is equally tough and you will surely be glad when you arrive at your guesthouse which is right on the edge of the national park.
Hike: 14 km - 1300 m elevation (up and down) - 7-8 hours
Day 4: Mount Sabinyo to Lake Mutanda
Today will be your first day on the bike. You descent from higher ground on bumpy roads that are essentially lava bedrock. You cycle past fertole fields of the mountain communities and if the group is fit you can do a detour via Lake Chahafi.
Once arrived on the southern shore of Lake Mutanda, you hop into the packrafts and paddle to Gahiza Island, a picture perfect retreat with possibly the best view in Uganda. Wind down and enjoy the tranquil vibes if this unique spot.
Bike: 35 km - 390 m elevation gain, 780 m elevation loss
Paddle: 4 km - 1.5 hours
Day 5: Lake Mutanda to Nkuringo
The conditions on Lake Mutanda are usually calm in the morning and after an early breakfast you will start paddling northbound on Uganda's most beautiful lake. You will pass a number of islands and if you wish you can go for a swim along the way. The laske is safe and the water temperature wonderful.
On the northern short your support vehicle will be waiting with the bikes and you will cycle to the village of Nkuringo on the edge of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park.
Bike: 20 km - 430 m elevation gain, 280 m elevation loss
Paddle: 8 km - 3 hours

Today you will have a big hiking day ahead crossing Bwindi Impenetrable Forst NP. This forest is home to half of the world's mountain gorilla population and although you will not specifically track them there is a chance to still see them. The forest itself is mind-blowing, with lots of monkey and bird species. You will follow the Ivy River Trail and it's a little rough and muddy on the first half when you will descent into the jungle. The path gets better halfway and you end your hike in the villago of Buhoma.
Hike: 13 km - 340 m elevation gain, 960 m elevation loss - 8 hours
Optional: Exchange today's program for a Gorilla Trekking experience in Bwindi. Kindly note that a surcharge applies and that permits have to be booked and paid in advance.
Day 7: Cycling to Birira River

Day 8: Whitewater rafting through the jungle
The descent down the Birira River starts with a espectacular whitewater rafting section. This first day will take you through the jungle, in between countless topical birds, past many local gin distilleries and over countless thrilling rapids. It feels somehow like a lost world. After a long day with lunch on water you will paddle gently to a place where you will set up camp and stay for a night under the stars.
Paddle: 30-40 km
Day 9: Packrafting to Queen Elizabeth NP
Today you will change the big raft for your individual packrafts and descend further towards the edge of Queen Elizabeth National Park.
