BOTSWANA & CAPRIVI EXPERIENCE

What to expect?

This self-drive tour starts and ends in Johannesburg. It will take you through Botswana, into the legendary Caprivi Strip and will certainly be a holiday to remember.

You will stay on main roads so you will not explicitly need 4x4 driving skills as for the Okavango part of the trip you will be flown in and out from Maun.

Your African experience starts here

Day 1 - Kwa Nokeng

On arrival at the airport you make your way to the car rental terminal to collect you rental car which is a 2x4 (Honda CRV or similiar) but with high ground clearance.

You spend the night just across the border into Botswana at Kwanokeng Lodge in a chalet.

Days 3, 4 & 5 - Chobe NP

Right against the borders with Zambia, Zimbabwe and Namibia meanders Chobe River, famous for its large elephant populations and Chobe National Park. From the lodge you can self-drive into the park or join one of the guided game drives and boat cruises offering you perspectives from both land and water and both guaranteeing fantastic sightings.

You are not allowed to take your rental car into Zimbabwe but the Victoria Falls is only 80 km away and the lodge offers day trips to this famous town and magnificent falls.

Day 2 - Nata

You make your way north into Botswana to Nata where you spend the night at Nata Lodge. The Makgadikgadi Pans are close by, so if you leave Kwanokeng early, you could visit the Park in the afternoon to enjoy the unspoilt nature and to see some of the Flamingos which populate the Nata side of the pans. You overnight in a luxury chalet.

Day 6 - Kwando

Day 14 - Waterberg Biosphere

Heading back into South Africa your last overnight is in the beautiful Waterberg Biosphere. The Waterberg offers striking scenery and since it only has general game (non-dangerous animals) you can do lovely self-guided hiking trails or drive around in your vehicle.

A great place to relax before returning to the airport.

Day 13 - Khama

Botswana is well-known for its vast wilderness areas, high density of wild animal populations and its incredible biodiversity but the only animal that people often do not get to see is the Rhinoceros.

An animal under threat all over Africa through poaching, the Khama Rhino Sanctuary offers a safe environment for both Black and White Rhino's amongst other animals. You can self-drive or book a guided game drive.

Day 12 - Gweta Lodge

You would typically return from your Moremi Safari around lunch time and so there are not too many hours left to drive that day.

Gweta Lodge is the perfect overnight and is very close to Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pans in case you did not have time from Nata Lodge.

Day 9 - Oudtshoorn

From Robertson you drive for about 4 hours along the famously beautiful Route 62 to Oudtshoorn, which is also known as the capital of the Karoo. This region is famous for its Ostrich farms and the Cango Caves, but what makes your accommodation a must is their unique Meerkat Tour, which you will need to book a few days before you arrive.

You meet up with their guide at sunrise, and with a camping chair and a coffee you head out to the Meerkats' burrows on the farm, and you watch them come out of their burrows and go about their energetic business. The Meerkats are habituated, which means they are used to people, but they are never fed or touched. Truly a unique opportunity to see these funny and resourceful creatures in their natural habitat.

Day 7 - Divundu

You may think you will have seen enough riverine areas but Divundu on the great Okavango River in the western section of the Caprivi will prove to be something different still.

The Okavango runs south into the great Okavango Delta, a source of life to many animals and known for a great variety of wildlife. There truly is something magical about this region.

Day 8 - Maun

Leaving Caprivi you cross back into Botswana and you make your way along the western edge of the Okavango Delta towards Maun known to be the safari capital of Botswana.

Days 9, 10 & 11 - Moremi

But that is not all, since Moremi is so big you will need to be flown to you accommodation which will be a luxury camp with all activities and meals included.

Since availability is limited we will not choose one fixed camp but stay flexible in order to get you the best experience at all times.
